Diving Medical
Assessments

Comprehensive diving medical assessments for recreational and professional divers, focused on fitness for diving, safety, and risk assessment.

Why Dive Medical Assessments Matter.

Diving places unique physical and environmental demands on the body. A structured medical assessment can help identify health concerns that may affect diving safety and fitness to participate.

Diving places unique physical and environmental demands on the body. A structured medical assessment can help identify health concerns that may affect diving safety and fitness to participate.

Our diving medical assessments are designed for both recreational and professional divers and are conducted in line with Australian Standards. Assessments focus on identifying potential medical risks associated with diving and supporting safe participation in diving activities. Your assessment includes a detailed dive health questionnaire, review of medical history, and relevant clinical testing to assess fitness for diving. Clear guidance and recommendations are provided following assessment, including referral or follow-up where appropriate.

What to Expect.

Your diving medical assessment is designed to provide a comprehensive review of your health and fitness for diving activities.

Dive health questionnaire & medical history

Your doctor will review your medical history, diving experience, current health, medications, and any previous diving-related concerns or symptoms.

Clinical assessment & testing

Relevant examinations and clinical tests will be performed to assess your overall fitness for diving and identify any potential risks associated with diving activities.

Assessment outcomes & recommendations

We’ll discuss the findings of your assessment, explain any concerns identified, and provide clear guidance regarding fitness for diving and any recommended next steps.

Ongoing review & follow-up

Where required, we can assist with further investigations, specialist referral, repeat assessments, or ongoing monitoring related to diving fitness and safety.

The Dive Medical Process

Dive medicals are conducted in accordance with Australian Standard AS 2299, ensuring a thorough risk assessment and certification process. The typical process includes:

  1. Completion of a dive questionnaire – This helps identify potential risks related to the type of diving you intend to undertake.
  2. Health summary report from your GP – Schedule an appointment with your regular GP to prepare a health summary report, including:
    1. Past medical and surgical history
    2. Prescription history
    3. Information relevant to diving risk assessment
    4. Copies of any specialist correspondence (e.g. recent letters from a cardiologist, respiratory physician, or surgeon)
  3. Required examinations – Your GP will arrange the necessary tests. Items 2-6 in table 1 can also be completed at our practice if arranged prior to your dive medical (additional fees may apply).
  4. Certification – If you attend your dive medication at our clinic with all required documentation and meet the medical requirements, certification can be provided on the same day.

For complex situations, additional supporting evidence may be required (e.g. a letter from an ENT surgeon following a procedure). Certification will be issued once all documents have been reviewed and approved.

Please note:

• Medicare rebates do not apply for dive medicals.
• Costs may be claimable as professional expenses if the dive medical is required for your occupation.
